The Fallacy of Wall Street and Where the Money’s Really Gone #TCOT

Hey, all you Tea Party Teabaggers (referring to your mailing tea bags to the White House, not the other thing), we don’t necessarily see eye-to-eye, but here’s an actual, honest-to-goodness thing to listen to that’s right up your alley — It’s a C-SPAN interview focusing on Wall Street and it’s utter falseness.

Listen to Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) interview Nomi Prins, author of “It Takes a Pillage”. [Please note that you will be redirected to the C-SPAN page for actual download and listening to the .mp3 version of the interview.]

I was only able to listen to about five minutes of [ more . . . ]

Defining Capitalism and Government vis-a-vis Each Other

Happened to watch a debate between crazy Dick Armey, Arianna Huffington, John Kasich, and Howard Dean.  I’m not so sure the debate C-SPAN aired (hosted by another organization with Joe Scarborough moderating) was the greatest ever, but it did raise an interesting question of defining Capitalism and Government vis-a-vis each other.

So, I thought I’d take a stab and see what people think.

Capitalism is meant to do and achieve those things that Government ought not do or even try, and Government’s role with respect to Capitalism is to define the collective and greater good of moral and ethical boundaries to be applied against Capitalism.

Fantastic Discussion with Democratic Candidates Vying for Senator Kennedy’s Seat in Massachusetts

For those of you interested in the race to fill Senator Kennedy’s seat, Greater Boston held a truly fantastic forum of the four principle candidates, Michael Capuano, Martha Coakley, Alan Khazei and Steve Pagliuca.  Topics ranged from national security to healthcare reform to matters pertaining to each individual candidate.  If you want to get to know these people — and you don’t already — this is a must watch.

Reverend Thomas Tobin on Hardball, “that any Catholic in public office, his first commitment has to be to his Faith.”

What?!?

Did Reverend Thomas Tobin, Bishop of Providence, RI really say that on a national news program?!?  I had to rewind it several times, and I still couldn’t believe it.  One of his major arguments was “that any Catholic in public office, his first commitment has to be to his Faith.”

Again, “that any Catholic in public office, his first commitment has to be to his Faith.”

To quote someone much more respectable, “I do not think it means what you think it means.”

I’m truly dismayed.

I respect beliefs, especially those grounded in religion, that abortion is wrong — I really do.  But what [ more . . . ]

What Actually Happened on the Senate Floor Last Night vis-a-vis Healthcare Reform?

There’s been a lot of debate on the topic (no pun intended, well, actually I think it’s a fantastic pun so, I’m going to use it!), but what exactly happened last night on the floor of the Senate vis-a-vis last night’s vote on Healthcare Reform is something worth investigating and explaining.

If you go to the Senate website and take a look at the Senate’s Legislative Process guide (.pdf link), you’ll see pretty clearly exactly what happened last night . . . and why what happened last night is so extraordinary.

For starters, what happened last night was not a vote [ more . . . ]

Launching #PledgeNow Campaign on Twitter [#HRC #Senate #Healthcare]

It’s past 8PM on Saturday evening on November 21, 2009, and the United States Senate just voted — weirdly enough — on one of the most critical votes of the year, if not perhaps a generation, that of proceeding with debate on Healthcare Reform.

I say ‘weirdly enough’ because it’s actually a really simple procedural vote that has since become perhaps THE most contentious vote of the year.  Simply put, NO Republican wants to even talk about Healthcare Reform.  And that’s embarrassing to us as a Nation and to the Republican Party, in particular.

Again, NO Republican actually wanted to formally talk [ more . . . ]

Is Sarah Palin Contagious?

Oprah Winfrey

Let’s follow the pattern . . .

a) Sarah Palin quits her job as Governor of Alaska.

b) Sarah Palin appears on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

c) Only days later, Oprah Winfrey announces that she is quitting her show of 20+ years.

Coincidence?  Or has Sarah Palin reached an infectious / contagious stage?

From a purely epidemiological standpoint this could go a long way to explain the Right’s paranoid, irrational, emotionally-charged behavior over the past few [ more . . . ]

Sarah Palin Maxes Out at Uber-Joe-The-Plumber Status

Like a comet having reached its closest distance to the sun only to move steadily into the deep, dark recesses of space, Sarah Palin is fading from her maximum brilliance, having peaked at Uber-Joe-The-Plumber status over the past days / weeks.

The date of her actual maximum was clouded by babbling, interference in the New York’s 23rd district House race, Facebook posts, and buildup to a book release that — while anticipated — seems to have fallen with as much visual appeal as NASA’s recent mission to collide a satellite with the moon.  (Fitting to Sarah Palin’s ’scientificless approach’, only scientists saw the [ more . . . ]

A Suggestion for the Media

Just because Dick Cheney says something does not mean it’s newsworthy.

At least, counter the person being interviewed or — at a minimum — conclude your report with helpful / informative facts.

As a perfect example . . .

Cheney told POLITICO.com, “There is no reason for an American president to bow to anyone. Our friends and allies don’t expect it, and our enemies see it as a sign of weakness.”

I’ll give Politico an ounce of credit, but only an ounce — They did report on both sides of the issue, at least presenting varying perspectives on President Obama’s Asia trip.

But where Politico fails [ more . . . ]

Hu’s More Fair at Summarizing President Obama’s China Remarks?

Seriously, what do you think?  (And — Yes — the headline was irresistible.  No offense intended.)

Who will more fairly, completely, and accurately summarize President Obama’s China remarks?

FOX News?

Censored Chinese news?
