If you think we haven’t achieved a level of technological sophistication to — even just possibly — affect climate . . . then you’re a moron.
If you think 6,800,000,000 people — that’s six-point-eight billion people — doing all the things they do on the surface of the planet can’t have an effect . . . then you’re a moron.
If you think here in the United States that, as the world’s largest consumer, we don’t have the responsibility to at least consume responsibly . . . then you’re a greedy moron.
If you think 30+ inches of snow falling in Washington D.C. [ more . . . ]
Let’s not overlook what’s been accomplished over the past year. Yeah, it’s not sexy. Yeah, it’s not the kind of thing you want to work on. But it’s progress nonetheless.
. . . We’ve brought the economy back from the brink of the worst economic condition since the Great Depression. Heck, we’ve even already been paid back some of the bailout money so many people, including myself, are generally upset over.
. . . We’ve articulated a plan to withdraw from Iraq.
. . . Our standing in the world has dramatically improved.
. . . We have plans for Afghanistan that help focus [ more . . . ]
Remember, and listen carefully tonight, it’s what the hell we’re doing there in Afghanistan, i.e. the Mission, that’s what’s important, not necessarily whether we pull troops out or put more in.
For more in-depth perspective on Afghanistan, here’s a recent article, “Outside Thinking on the Inside of Afghanistan . . . What To Do?”, that tries to get to the nitty-gritty details of formulating a strategy that works.
I don’t like having troops there, either. I wish the Bush Administration had not dropped the ball by utterly ignoring its responsibilities in Afghanistan. But it’s the situation we find ourselves in, and [ more . . . ]
It’s stunning. I know Rudy Giuliani quickly became a political opportunist over the course of the last Presidential election, but is it really possible he has absolutely no clue?
And is it really possible he thinks New York voters have such short attention spans?
9-11 is no laughing matter, and while Rudy Giuliani admittedly doesn’t laugh when he says one or the other, his polar-opposite positions on prosecuting terrorists in U.S. criminal courts is, well, laughable.
In 2006, Rudy Giuliani applauded the prosecution of Zacarias Moussaoui in Alexandria, VA. He even testified. Here’s an excerpt of the contemporaneous FOX News article on the [ more . . . ]
I don’t know, at least not for certain anyway — And it’s likely no else does for sure, either. In math-speak, Afghanistan is fairly intractable, meaning very difficult to solve . . . and for a problem of this magnitude, that’s an understatement.
It’s also in large part why I’ve stayed away from commenting much on Afghanistan here at LittleDEM. Simply put, it’s too important a problem to be at all casual about.
But now is the time to put forth all ideas, suggestions, and observations to get Afghanistan right (or at least as right as we can make the situation). It’s [ more . . . ]
Thank You for allowing all of us to bear witness to the return of the fallen from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Nothing more need be said except to highlight the cowardice of the previous Administration to hide that which all Americans should be compelled to bear witness to. Those that are killed in the service of our Country deserve no less than our attention, thoughts, and prayers as they are each returned to their native soil. To obscure every American’s opportunity to do just that is to diminish full and complete comprehension of the nobility of their sacrifice.

Yes, next week we’ll hit a rather infamous anniversary. Two years ago on October 9, 2007 the Dow Jones Industrial Average hit 14,164. In fact, the Dow actually hit 14,166 during the day on October 9th. And it even hit a momentary all-time high of 14,198 two days later on October 11th.
But that’s, unfortunately, all history, isn’t it?
Now — two years later — we sit at a ‘recovered’ 30% loss. That’s much better than the roughly 54% loss the Dow experienced as recently as March 2009 when the Dow bottomed out at roughly 6,500, but it’s still a huge step backward [ more . . . ]
As we remember 9-11, let us not forget those who attacked us. And let us not loose our resolve to — however we can, however we need to, abiding by our values and code — to make sure it does not happen again.
There is legitimate debate as of late — as there always should be — on how to proceed with respect to Afghanistan. We should always have debate on such topics. But let us not loose sight on the objective, that of disabling and dismantling Al-Qaeda. They are the ones that attacked us, and it’s them and their affiliates [ more . . . ]
